The revolution Montalcinello needs

Beyond “eat and drink.” Let’s stop consuming the land and start enhancing it: courage, identity, and radical choices to save Montalcinello.

For decades in Montalcinello the community kept the village alive by relying on conviviality: dinners, festivals and events under the banner of "eat and drink". Let’s be clear: these initiatives have undeniable merit, since they have always funded the valuable activities of local associations and kept the social fabric united.

However, today the village is living a deep drama, marked by a silent and unstoppable hemorrhage: depopulation. We lose our young people one piece at a time, almost without noticing. It starts when they’re little, getting used to going to play soccer in nearby towns because here there’s no space or opportunity, and it ends, once they’ve grown up, with them moving for good to the surrounding cities, leaving behind a void (you can feel it on the main avenue) that no festival will ever be able to fill.

Continuing to rely exclusively on this formula means, in fact, feasting on agony. A paradox that becomes glaring when a hundred people show up at the tables to hunt and eat meat (success), but three or four for the eco-Sundays where you hunt litter (failure). The real risk is that the festival turns into a kind of Last Supper, or the bacchanals of a fading empire that toasts while its foundations sink.

The solution cannot be to bet everything on a single event a year either, fooling ourselves that we can shine for just one midsummer night and then return to oblivion for the remaining three hundred and sixty-four days. So far we have lacked the ability, and perhaps the will, to truly act as a team and come together beyond eat and drink. We have lacked an idea able to outline a strong identity offer, capable of generating intrinsic value and reversing an inexorable impoverishment, clearly visible in the prices of houses and land now reduced to historic lows.

It is time to make courageous, disruptive choices (which does not mean, however, bullying or censoring those who bring new ideas and try to point a way out of the tunnel). We need radical decisions, the kind that until yesterday no one would ever have thought to take. In the mid-1800s, Baron Haussmann in Paris had the audacity to tear down entire dilapidated neighborhoods to let the city breathe and project it into modernity. We must find exactly that same courage but for a… warehouse. We must have the strength to demolish our eco-monster, to begin a new path. It must be the first step: the symbol of a rebirth that once and for all stops consuming the land and finally starts enhancing it. The Pro Loco, if it truly wants to act as guarantor of the town’s decorum, cannot in any way justify or occupy such a hornet’s nest that heaven forbid it become a public urinal

A tangible example of how you can start again by focusing on your own historical and natural heritage is the Archaeological-Natural Park "La Buca delle Fate" in Piano di Mommio (Massarosa). This place exists, it is not a utopia, and it has just become accessible to everyone again: right at the end of last month, in March 2026, the important redevelopment works were in fact completed.

There they focused on the essentials to create a real attraction:

Safe trails: The wooded area was cleared without overturning its soul. The steep steps were fixed and new wooden railings were installed along the route to make it accessible to everyone.

History put into a system: It was enough to enhance a route of about 800 meters that leads straight to the ancient cavities where Neanderthal man lived.

They didn’t invent anything fake or artificial. They took their identity, cleaned it up, made it safe, and offered it to the world. It is exactly the kind of courage that today, in Montalcinello, we need more than ever.
