BORGO MONTALCINELLO

We are not Montalcino. We are not Montepulciano. No crowds, no traffic. Just ancient stones, real traditions, wild nature, Sienese landscapes, and two or three genuine cats. Welcome to Montalcinello, the village where the stones speak

Our partisan streets struggling with Google Maps. Montalcinello resists.

Montalcinello protects its history: from the partisans to the medieval alleys, the village faces tourism and security to preserve memory and authenticity.

Montalcinello, as we know, still preserves the echo of the twenty-year-old partisans who had the courage to believe in a better world. Of course, there are always those who say that their sacrifice was in vain, that they “just made noise,” that the Germans were already retreating anyway, that the other guy was building roads... the usual bar talk just to stir the air a bit. The fact is that, like it or not, if today we can indulge in a luxurious breakfast and freely speak our minds in front of a cappuccino, a croissant, maybe even a whole-wheat brioche when we feel virtuous, it is also thanks to them. Watermelons, melons, chips come and go like governments; the Constitution remains.

This summer, however, the usual vague threat: a Dutch car, driven by a tourist perfectly roasted by exhausting hours of driving to reach us, blindly let itself be guided by Google Maps straight into our medieval narrow streets, obviously coming out defeated from the encounter. It certainly wasn’t the first time: for years, poor foreigners, already worn out by the journey, have found themselves stuck in alleys designed for small cars of another era, if not directly for the legendary Ape vehicles that still parade here with dignity.

At that point we said: enough! The Mayor, with the firmness reserved for decisive battles, called in the Municipal Police. Then, in an epic duel worthy of David against Goliath, we took pen and paper (digital) and wrote to Google Maps: “Dear Sirs, remove those roads from your routes.” Incredibly, Google replied. Not only that: they even cooperated! And finally, the way was opened (the right one, for once) to manage tourist flows without collateral damage.

The work is not yet finished. More changes will be necessary, and anyone who notices problems is invited to report them in the comments. On our part, there is full willingness to intervene: if we were not able to stop the fascists and Nazis on our own, at least we want to manage SUVs in the lanes without waiting for help from American Google.

And now, as the opening of a new restaurant is being prepared and other initiatives are simmering, the goal is clear: to offer those who visit Montalcinello an experience worthy of our history. Because the village is not just stones and alleys: it is living memory and daily resistance.
